Construction Process

...
Project team members walk on ground mats to inspect construction on a recent transmission line rebuild project.

Scope of Work

Clearing the Corridor: To prepare the area for construction and to help clear any potential hazard trees that could cause outages, vegetation management crews will be cutting, trimming, and mowing within the corridor.

Rebuild: The Section 1 line that runs from a CMP substation in Augusta to Smiley Avenue in Winslow will be rebuilt with new, stronger, more storm-resilient steel poles.

Reroute: In Winslow, Section 40 from Smiley Avenue to Winslow Substation also will be rebuilt with steel poles. Beginning at Smiley Avenue, Section 1 will be rerouted onto the new Section 40 segment.

Decommission: The current Section 1 also travels from Smiley Avenue and runs parallel to Route 100 to Heywood Road and the Winslow Substation on Benton Avenue. Once the new line is energized, the existing structures will be removed. This will also be the case for the old section 1 in Augusta.

Work Activities

 Tree work:

  • In most locations this will entail the use of heavy machinery to cut and clear trees within the corridor. However, trees will be cut by hand in sensitive areas.
  • Please see the Trees and Vegetation page for more information about tree work.

Vegetation clearing and mowing:

  • Crews will be using equipment to trim and remove brush and other vegetation from the corridor.

 Matting:

  • Timber ground mats safely disburse the weight of construction vehicles, so they do not disrupt the land below them.
  • Ground mats are placed in environmentally sensitive areas in the corridor while work is being conducted.

Construction:

  • New stronger, more storm-resistant steel poles will be installed. Drilling will be required.
  • New, more resilient tree wire will be used.
  • The existing line will be decommissioned and new line energized.

Structure Removal and Restoration:

  • The old line and pole structures will be removed and disposed of.
  • Properties along the line route will be restored.

Timeline

Work for Section 1 is anticipated to take place between November 2024 and October 2026. Please visit the Construction Schedule page to see the sequence of work.

Crews may be working in an area, leave, and return at a later date depending on the nature of the work they are doing. Our work schedule may change due to poor weather conditions.

Safety

At CMP, safety is a priority – yours and our crews. Our easements will be active construction sites. Please do not enter. If you have any project-related questions, please contact Project Outreach at [email protected] or 888.267.0831.

Work Hours and Noise

Work activity will comply with town ordinances. Typical construction noise, including drilling and the operation of heavy equipment should be expected.

Our goal is to work with communities and reach out to neighbors to ensure all improvements are performed safely and with minimal disruptions to daily lives, the community, and our environment.
